Two Fishing Records for Nebraska ManSouth Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks — 7/18/2006Marlyn Wiebelhaus of Wynot, Neb., got his first record fish on May 18 on Lake Yankton when he landed a 5-pound gizzard shad. The fish was 21 inches long and had a girth of 15 1/18 inches. Wiebelhaus made his second entry into the S.D. record book when he landed a 4-pound, 8-ounce white sucker on June 7. That fish was taken from the Missouri River near Yankton. Both of Wiebelhaus' trophies are listed among South Dakota's "unrestricted records." That means they were taken by means other than hook and line. Fish taken in the unrestricted category are caught by using a bow and arrow, netting, spearing or snagging. Both species of fish had longstanding records. The previous gizzard shad record was 4 pounds, 5.2 ounces set on Lake Francis Case on Feb. 7, 1988. The previous white sucker record was set on June 2, 1985, when a 2-pound, 12-ounce fish was landed on Mud Creek.
