Grant Will Help Portland Youth Learn to FishOregon Department of Fish and Wildlife — 3/24/2006Children with University Park Recreation Center's after-school program will participate in several fishing trips thanks to the $7,946 grant. "It can be difficult for youth to find fishing opportunities in an urban area," said Laura Tesler, Restoration and Enhancement Program Coordinator. "The program funded by this grant will introduce kids to angling and help them understand and enjoy the outdoors," Created by the Oregon Legislature in 1989, the Fish Restoration and Enhancement Program is funded by a surcharge on sport and commercial fishing licenses and commercial poundage fees. The program's seven-member citizen board reviews fish restoration and enhancement project proposals and makes funding recommendations to the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission.
