Grant Will Fund Fishing Docks At Sunnyside Park In Linn County

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife  — 3/20/2006

ALBANY - Anglers soon will have improved access to a fishing pond at Sunnyside Park near Sweet Home, thanks in part to a $15,000 grant from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's Fish Restoration and Enhancement Program

The six-acre pond is stocked annually with trout and offers opportunities to catch warmwater fish species, but fishing at the pond is difficult because steep, brushy banks leave few shoreline areas accessible. To remedy this, two angling docks will be constructed. The structures are compliant with standards established under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

"This project will allow for more people to access fish at the park by fishing off of the docks rather than casting through the dense bushes," said ODFW fish biologist Wayne Hunt.

Sunnyside Park, owned and managed by the Linn County Parks Department and located just above Foster Reservoir, is one of the largest parks in the Willamette Valley.

Created by the Oregon Legislature in 1989, the Fish Restoration and Enhancement Program is funded by a surcharge on sport and commercial fishing licenses and commercial poundage fees.

The program's seven-member citizen board reviews fish restoration and enhancement project proposals and makes funding recommendations to the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission.
