Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation
Free Antique Tackle Appraisals Available At Wildlife Expo, Aug. 25-27Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation — 8/10/2006"I'm really looking forward to seeing what folks will bring to the Wildlife Expo," said Karl White, who authored a series of books on the growing hobby of antique lure collecting. "You never know - you might have a very valuable lure hidden away in the attic or garage." The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation is partnering with a wide range of other state agencies, private individuals and outdoor-related companies to host this huge event. The Expo is designed to promote and perpetuate the appreciation of Oklahoma's wildlife and natural resources and provide hands-on learning opportunities for all types of outdoor enthusiasts. The Wildlife Expo will take place Aug. 25-27 on the expansive grounds of the Lazy E Arena, just north of Oklahoma City. Expo hours will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The Karl and Beverly White National Fishing Tackle Museum, one of the most comprehensive antique tackle collections in the world, is a top attraction at the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks. Some 30,000 artifacts comprise the collection, which is valued at $4 million. "Some folks just want to know the value of their lure on the open market. But there are also quite a few people who have an old lure from their dad or grandfather and they are interested in the history and the origins of these old lures for sentimental reasons," White said. The Expo is designed as an entertaining and educational event for both avid outdoor enthusiasts and those new to hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities. Every visitor will be sure to find something that interests them, from live butterflies, to mountain bike riding, to dog training, to sampling wild game. Visitors should bring more than just antique lures with them to the Expo. Geologists will be on hand to help visitors learn more about the rock or mineral specimens they bring. Plant experts will also be available to help participants identify leaves of native Oklahoma trees, shrubs and grasses. You can register for the Expo's prize drawings at wildlifedepartment.com, and you will be entered in an exclusive drawing for a lifetime combination hunting and fishing license and a John Deere ATV from P&K Equipment. Thanks to generous sponsors, more than 50 annual and lifetime hunting, fishing or combination licenses, as well as other great prizes, will be given away at the event.
