Partial Fish Kill On Little Wapsipinicon River In Howard County

Iowa Department of Natural Resources  — 8/8/2006

The DNR is investigating a partial fish kill in the Little Wapsipinicon River just west of Elma after reports of dead fish on Tuesday morning.

The DNR found a scattering of larger dead fish and thousands of live small fish along two miles of the stream. Most of the dead fish were minnows and suckers, with a few bullheads.

"We have not found a source of pollution," said Tom McCarthy, an environmental specialist with the Manchester DNR field office.

Large dead fish and live small fish could indicate that low oxygen levels caused the fish kill, since larger fish are affected first under those conditions. Nighttime sags in oxygen levels are common during summer months.

McCarthy said that the fish have been dead several days. "If the fish kill had been reported earlier, we might have been able to find a source," he said.

Daytime oxygen levels are high and ammonia levels are low. The stream is relatively clear and fast moving.

Fisheries staff will do a fish count and continue to investigate.

Fish kills and spills can be reported to your local DNR field office within normal business hours. Outside of normal business hours, report fish kills and spills to the DNR's 24-hour spill hotline at (515) 281-8694. DNR field offices include:
