ODFW Offers Fly Tying Workshop For Women

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife  — 1/24/2006

PENDLETON – Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Blue Mountain Flycasters today announced they will team-up again this year to present a fly tying workshop Feb. 18 in Pendleton.

This workshop runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the City Recreation Center, 500 SW Dorion Street. It is designed to teach the basic art of fly tying. Participants will learn to tie wet and dry flies, including the Wooly Bugger, the Elk Hair Caddis and other popular patterns.

Instructors will discuss aquatic insects and how they relate to fly tying, as well as what types, sizes and colors of flies work best in different types of water and how to use them to attract fish.

"The workshop is designed for beginners, but all skill levels are welcome," said ODFW workshop coordinator Mary Hoverson. "Space is limited, so early registration is recommended."

The $50 registration fee includes a continental breakfast, lunch, all the materials needed to tie several flies and a fly tying kit that participants get to keep. Instructors for the workshop are members of the Blue Mountain Flycasters, the local chapter of the Federation of Fly Fishers.

This workshop is one of several presented throughout the year as part of the statewide Becoming An Outdoors-Woman program. BOW workshops are designed to teach women the basic skills in a variety of outdoor recreational activities including fly fishing, camping, shooting, outdoor cooking, survival, float tubing, llama packing, kayaking, fly tying and many others.

Those interested in registering for this workshop or finding out more about the other BOW workshops offered statewide should call ODFW Education Coordinators Mary Hoverson in La Grande at (541) 963-2138 and Nancy Smogor in Bend at (541) 388-6363 or the BOW registrar in Salem at (503) 947-6025.
