New Bass Limit Is Approved For Mallard Lake

Arkansas Game and Fish Commission  — 9/13/2006

ANILA - Mallard Lake has long been in Arkansas's fishing record book, but the lake is struggling. A new length limit on largemouth bass has been set as part of the treatment.

Beginning, Jan. 1, 2007, anglers can keep only one largemouth bass over 21 inches in length in a limit of four bass per day. The rule replaces the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's previous 16- to 21-inch protected slot limit, with four bass per day, that had been in effect since 2000.

Mallard Lake is just 300 acres and is north of Manila in Mississippi County. It adjoins Big Lake Wildlife Management Area and is a levee lake, meaning it was formed by the building of earthen levees on all four sides.

On March 2, 1976, Mallard Lake attracted nationwide attention when Aaron Mardis of Memphis caught a 16-pound, 4-ounce largemouth from it on a spinner bait.

Bass fishermen flocked to the little lake, but bass production sagged. In 1993 the lake was renovated and a catch-and-release rule for largemouth bass put into effect. Continual monitoring of the lake by AGFC fisheries biologists have shown that the larger bass are not as numerous as desired for a balanced fish population despite the AGFC's stocking of fingerling bass into the lake.
