Historic Brown Trout Stocking In Little Missouri River

Arkansas Game and Fish Commission  — 1/24/2007

MURFREESBORO - Arkansas anglers have enjoyed fishing for rainbow trout in the Lake Greeson tailwater for many years, but now they'll have a chance to target another trout species in the popular fishery below Narrows Dam.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission recently stocked brown trout in the six-mile stretch of the Little Missouri River below LakeGreeson, marking the first time in the history of the AGFC trout program that brown trout have been stocked in the southwest Arkansas fishery.

"It's a historic day for this fishery," said AGFC District 7 fisheries biologist Drew Wilson. "This is a first."

AGFC stocked about 400 brown trout on Monday from the AGFC hatchery at Mammoth Spring. The fish were 6 to 7 inches long.

"People have been asking for something different," explained Les Claybrook, AGFC assistant district fisheries biologist in District 7. "We've been getting a lot of requests for brown trout. If we can give [anglers] something they want and it doesn't hurt anything, then we try to do it. We're doing this on a trial basis to see how they do. We want to see how the trout do and how they're received by anglers."

Brown trout will be managed under a catch-and-release regulation, requiring anglers to immediately return all brown trout to the water. To avoid confusion, color signs have been posted showing the difference between brown and rainbow trout markings and coloration.

The browns weren't the only new additions to the Little Missouri River. Several tagged rainbow trout were also introduced to the tailwater as part of an AGFC study to determine utilization of the fishery and distribution of the fish.

AGFC marked the rainbows with tags in four colors – red, yellow, blue and green. The 1 ½-inch tags are attached to the dorsal fins of the fish. Signs that explain the project have been posted at major access points to the LakeGreeson tailwater, alerting anglers to the tagging program. Anglers are urged to report catches of tagged fish to the AGFC by calling toll-free (877) 425-7577.
